What is a GBIC?

"Short for gigabit interface converter, a transceiver that converts serial electric signals to serial optical signals and vice versa. In networking, a GBIC is used to interface a fiber optic system with an Ethernet system, such as Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet.
A GBIC allows designers to design one type of device that can be adapted for either optical or copper applications. GBIC's also are hot-swappable, which adds to the ease of upgrading electro-optical communication networks " (Webopedia).

Optical Transceivers

EMC optical transceivers easily convert a variety of protocols from copper to fiber (or from multimode or single-mode fiber) within the same physical infrastructure.

The Five Types of Optical Transceivers

1. GBICs (also available in CWDM) - Standard transceivers, used with Gigabit Ethernet and fiber channels.

2. SFP's - Available in three different wavelengths: 850nm, 1310nm, and 1550nm. SFP's are CWDM and single-optic (1310/1490 upstream/downstream). SFP's have data rates that range up to 4.25 Gbit/s.

3. XFP's - C Transceivers have data rates up to 10 Gbit/s with 300m to 10km.

4. X2s - C Transceivers come with the capability of 10 Gbit data transfer within a few meters up to 40Km.

5. Xenpaks - C Transceivers come with the capability of 10 Gbit data transfer within a few meters up to 80Km.

Within the five products ranges (above), these four main categories can be found:

• SX/SR - C Short Haul (range up to 500 metre),
• LX/LR - C Long Haul(range up to 12km),
• ZX/ER - C Extended Reach (range up to 70 km in GBIC/SFP and 40km in 10 gig),
• EZX/ZR - C Extended Reach +(range up to 120kms GBIC/SFP and 80km in 10gig).
